Facebook: What is difference between Profiles & Fan Pages

Facebook is a key part of online marketing now a days (Feb 2010) so you need to understand the difference between a Facebook "Profile" and a Facebook "Fan Page."  A "profile" is meant to represent a single individual, and a "fan page" (aka "pages") is meant for organizations.  Important: It is a violation of a Facebook policy for an organization to create a profle. So don't create a profile page for your business, you will probably have it terminated.

You have to create a fan page for your business.  A fan page can be associated with a profile, but it does not have to be. You can create a fan page without having a profile.  If you do associate your fan page with your profile, current Facebook features will not let you dissaccociate your profile from your fan page.  For a business this could be bad news when it comes time to sell your business and you want to sell your Facebook fan page as an asset with the sale.  Here is what I do.

I help alot of businesses with their Facebook online marketing.  I always create a new Fan Page from scratch with no Profile attached to the Fan Page.  This way the Fan Page can easily remain an assest of the business without the burden of being attached to someones personal Facebook profile.

Here is the current Facebook policy on Profiles and Fan Pages, taken directly from facebook.com

"Facebook profiles are meant to represent a single individual. Organizations of any type are not permitted to maintain an account under the name of their organization. We have created Facebook Pages to allow organizations to have a presence on Facebook. These Pages are distinct presences, separate from user profiles, and optimized for an organization's needs to communicate, distribute information/content, engage their fans, and capture new audiences virally through their fan's recommendations to their friends. Facebook Pages are designed to be a media rich, valuable presence for any artist, business or brand.

If you create a profile for your business, your account may be disabled for violating our Terms of Use. If you have questions about how to best leverage your Facebook Page, please check out our Insider's Guide or FAQ."
