Blog Internet & Search Engine Marketing What is Google Webmaster Tools?

Google gives you a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tool that is a way for you to help Google help you.  It is a free service called Google Webmaster Tools, or GWT for short.  GWT provides you with an easy way to make your site more Google-friendly. The tools in GWT provide you with detailed reports about your site's visibility on Google. Specifically, GWT allows you to:

  • Get Google's view of your site and diagnose problems

  • Discover your link and query traffic

  • Share information about your site

Google Webmaster Tools can be used to improve SEO on any website. You should create a GWT account and then use the account interface to tell Google what it needs to know about your website.  In exchange, Google will give you several great pages of info about your website, including the keywords used by searchers to find your website.

GWT asks for sitemap, which is a tool for telling Google all the pages in your website.  But please be warned that submitting a Google sitemap can alter your rankings, so if you are already indexed well in Google, you may not want to add a sitemap.

Complete details including signing up for the service can be done at Google, click to go to: Google Webmaster Tools (opens in new window)
